The Beginning: ThinkPad X20 (2000)

The history begins in 2000 with the IBM ThinkPad X20 — an ultraportable laptop with a 12.1" display, Pentium III processor, and a weight of about 1.7 kg. For its time, this was an impressive achievement for a fully-featured notebook. Subsequent models X21-X24 were faster and better equipped.

The Golden Era: X200, X201, X220, X230 (2008-2012)

During this period the X series matured. The X200 (Core 2 Duo) and X201 (first Intel Core i5/i7 generation) brought real business performance.

The breakthrough came with the X220 (2011) — the last ThinkPad with the classic seven-row keyboard regarded as one of the best in laptop history — and it was the first to offer an IPS display option.

A year later, the X230 (2012) switched to an island-style (chiclet) keyboard — a change that still sparks debate among enthusiasts, though the machine remained highly serviceable.

The Ultrabook Era: X1 Carbon (since 2012)

In 2012, the X1 line emerged, introducing the X1 Carbon Gen 1 — the first ThinkPad with a carbon-fiber chassis. This was a completely different category: thin, light ultrabook with a 14" display. Subsequent generations brought:

• Gen 5 (2017) - First X1 Carbon with USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 (goodbye Slim Tip power connector)
• Gen 9 and newer (2021+) - Return to 16:10 aspect ratio, up to 4K displays, later OLED options
• Gen 12-13 (2024-2025) - Intel Core Ultra processors and OLED 2880×1800 120 Hz display at around 986g weight

Alongside came variants: X1 Yoga (convertible, 14") and X1 Nano (from 2020, ~907g — the lightest ThinkPad ever built).

Standard X Models and the Move to X13

In parallel evolved the classic, smaller line: X240, X250, X260, X270, X280, then X390 (2019), where the display grew to 13.3".

After the X390, Lenovo dropped the four-digit designations in favor of X13 Gen 1, Gen 2… — today this is the main "small" business ThinkPad, available with Intel processors and (in separate versions) AMD Ryzen.
