In short: The touchpad in the ThinkPad T440, T440s, T440p and W540 can be replaced with a model from the T450 or T460 without any mechanical modifications. The connector, dimensions and screw layout are identical. The result: physical buttons for the TrackPoint, quiet clicking, and no more "clunkpad". Installation time: about 30 minutes. Part cost: approx. 15-50 EUR.
Why is the original ThinkPad T440 touchpad problematic?
In the T440 series Lenovo used a so-called clickpad - one large panel without separate physical buttons. Left, right and middle clicks are simulated by pressing the lower or upper part of the panel. In theory a modern solution, in practice widely criticized:
- Working with the TrackPoint (red pointing stick) without dedicated buttons is ergonomically poor - especially during long use and middle-button scrolling
- Touching the edge of the touchpad often registers accidental clicks
- The precision of the middle click (essential for TrackPoint scrolling) is low
- The characteristic, loud "clunk" with every click annoys users and colleagues
The ThinkPad community nicknamed this touchpad the "clunkpad". Lenovo listened to the criticism and in the next generation - W541, T450, T450s, T460 - returned to the proven layout with three physical buttons above the touchpad for the TrackPoint (left/middle/right) and two below for touch gestures (left/right).
Is replacing the T440 touchpad with a T450/T460 model possible?
Yes. The touchpad from a T450 or T460 physically fits the slot in the T440, T440s, W540 and T440p without any mechanical modifications. The ribbon cable connector, module dimensions and screw hole layout are identical.

What to buy - Synaptics or Alps?
Touchpads for the T450/T460 are made by two manufacturers: Synaptics and Alps. Both fit mechanically and both work, but they differ in Windows driver configuration.
Synaptics (ACPI ID: ACPI\LEN200E) - preferred choice:
- Easier driver installation in Windows - drivers are available in the Lenovo package
- Better multi-touch gesture support (two-finger scrolling, zoom)
- Greater availability of verified units on the used market
Alps - the alternative:
- Requires separate Alps drivers (not Synaptics)
- Works equally well as Synaptics under Linux - plug and play with libinput
- Different device ID than LEN200E
Buying warning: many sellers on eBay and AliExpress describe touchpads as "Synaptics" while actually shipping an Alps model. If Synaptics matters to you - ask the seller for the chipset manufacturer before ordering. At ABCDEAL you can find a ThinkPad T450/T460 touchpad with physical buttons with full type information and FRU number.
Original part price: approx. 15-30 EUR for a used module from the secondary market (eBay). Part with 12-month warranty: approx. 50-55 EUR.
What tools are needed to replace the touchpad?
- Phillips PH0 or PH1 screwdriver
- Plastic spudger / pry tool for opening the case (optional)
- Anti-static wrist strap (recommended)
- New, slightly thicker rubber bumpers for the screen - see warning below
How to disassemble a ThinkPad T440 / T440p before replacing the touchpad
- Shut down the laptop and disconnect the power adapter.
- Remove the external battery (slide the latch on the back).
- Remove the large bottom cover (service door) - unscrew one screw and slide the panel off.
- Remove the optical drive (T440p) or hard drive - this gives access to the keyboard bezel.
- Remove the internal battery - disconnect the connector and unscrew the screws.
- Remove the keyboard bezel - the plastic frame around the keyboard. Pry gently from the top, there are several clips around the perimeter. Do not force the plastic.
- Disconnect the old touchpad - you will find two cables:
- The main ribbon cable - clearly visible, lift the latch and pull the ribbon out. If the ribbon is damaged, ABCDEAL stocks a ThinkPad T440/T450/T460 touchpad ribbon cable.
- A second, black 3-wire cable on the right side of the touchpad - gently disconnect the connector.
- Unscrew the 4 screws holding the touchpad in the frame.
- Remove the old touchpad upward (toward the keyboard).
Important note: the second black 3-wire cable is frequently overlooked in tutorials. If you forget to disconnect it and pull the touchpad - you may damage the connector or the cable. Always check both sides carefully before removing the module.
How to install the new T450 touchpad in a ThinkPad T440?
- Insert the new touchpad into the opening - align with the screw holes.
- Tighten the 4 screws (not too tight - the plastic frame is fragile).
- Connect the black 3-wire cable on the right side.
- Connect the main ribbon cable and snap the latch closed.
- Reassemble the laptop in reverse order: bezel, internal battery, drive/disk, bottom cover, external battery.
Screen scratch risk - how to prevent it?
The new T450 touchpad may be slightly thicker than the original T440 unit. With the screen lid closed, the touchpad panel may touch the display surface and scratch it. Several users have reported permanent screen damage after this modification.
Solution: before closing the laptop, add new, slightly thicker rubber feet/bumpers near the webcam (top edge of the screen bezel) than the originals. This increases the gap between the panel and the case and protects the screen. Cost: a few cents worth of self-adhesive rubber strip.
Installing T450 touchpad drivers in Windows
After the physical swap the touchpad will be detected as an unknown device or the wrong drivers may install. Windows assigns it the ACPI ID ACPI\LEN200E, while for the T440 it expects ACPI\LEN0036. This must be fixed manually.
Method: editing the Synaptics INF driver file
- Uninstall the current Synaptics/Alps drivers via Control Panel → Programs.
- Download the touchpad driver for the T450 from Lenovo Support (search: "T450 pointing device driver").
- Do not install immediately - extract the archive to a folder, e.g.
C:\DRIVERS\UNAV. - Find the file
SynPD.infin the subfolderWinWDF\X64\(64-bit) orX86\(32-bit). - Open the file in Notepad and make two changes:
- Find and delete all lines containing "LEN0036"
- Find all occurrences of "LEN200E" and change them to "LEN0036"
- Save the file and install the driver manually via Device Manager (right-click the device → Update driver → Browse my computer).
- Restart the laptop.
Blocking automatic driver updates: go to gpedit.msc → Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Device Installation → Restrictions and add the ID ACPI\LEN0036 to the blocked list. Otherwise Windows Update will overwrite your driver at the next update.
Alternative - Windows registry modification
If you do not want to disable driver signature verification (required for a manually modified INF file), the same result can be achieved by directly editing the Windows registry - changing the Hardware ID value in the appropriate Synaptics driver key. The method is described in detail on the ThinkPads.com forum (thread "CLUNKPAD").
Does the T440 touchpad upgrade work under Linux?
Linux handles the new touchpad much more easily than Windows.
Synaptics: works plug and play after installation - the system detects it as "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad". Recommended driver: libinput (default in most distributions). Two-finger gestures, scrolling - all work without configuration.
Alps: detected as "PS/2 ALPS GlidePoint". If the touchpad behaves erratically - uninstall the xf86-input-synaptics package and leave only libinput. Additional configuration possible in /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf: options psmouse synaptics_intertouch=0.
What does replacing the T440 touchpad actually give you?
- Three physical buttons above the touchpad for the TrackPoint: left, middle (scroll), right
- Two physical buttons below the touchpad for touch gestures
- Precise, quiet clicking - no more "clunk"
- Much more comfortable TrackPoint use, especially during long sessions
- Multi-touch gesture compatibility (2-finger scrolling, zoom)

Frequently asked questions
Does a T460 touchpad fit a T440?
Yes. A T460 touchpad physically fits the T440, T440s, T440p and W540 without any modifications - identical ribbon connector, dimensions and screw layout.
Do I need to reinstall Windows after replacing the touchpad?
No. Only a manual installation and modification of the Synaptics driver for the T450 is required (editing the INF file - changing the ID LEN200E to LEN0036). Under Linux no driver installation is needed.
Can replacing the T440 touchpad scratch the screen?
It can, if you do not add thicker rubber bumpers under the screen lid. The T450/T460 touchpad is slightly thicker - without correction, when the lid is closed it touches the display. Use bumpers 0.5-1 mm thicker than the originals.
How much does a ThinkPad T440 touchpad replacement cost?
Part: 15-55 EUR depending on source and model. Installation: 30 minutes, no service visit required.
