In short: in most cases, repairing a ThinkPad is worth it - a typical repair (keyboard, display, fan, battery) costs 100-400 zł in parts, while the rest of the laptop (case, motherboard, processor) still works and is worth several times that. The exception is a failed motherboard in an older model (5+ years) - then the repair cost can exceed the value of the machine. Below we show how to calculate this yourself before deciding.

Why is this even worth thinking about?

Lenovo ThinkPad business laptops are designed differently from consumer devices - a modular build, screwed-in (not glued) mounting for most components, and the availability of spare parts for years after production ends make repairs here typically simple and cheap compared to, say, ultrabooks with a glued-in battery or soldered memory. This isn't an accident - ThinkPads have always been designed with serviceability in mind for companies, where replacing an entire laptop every 2 years would not be cost-effective.

How do I calculate whether a repair is worth it?

Simple rule: compare the repair cost to the market value of a working unit of the same model, not to the price of a brand-new laptop. If the repair cost is less than 30-40% of the value of a working used unit, the repair is almost always worth it. If it exceeds 60-70%, it's worth considering a different machine.

Type of failureTypical part costWorth it?
Keyboard, palmrest, touchpad50-150 złAlmost always worth it
Fan, thermal paste30-100 złAlmost always worth it
Battery80-200 złWorth it if the rest of the unit is healthy
Display cable, hinges30-100 złAlmost always worth it
Display panel (full LCD)150-500 złUsually worth it, check age and model
Motherboard300-1200 zł (depends on model and CPU)Calculate separately - see below

When does a repair NOT make sense?

There are two realistic scenarios where buying a different unit beats repairing the current one:

  • A failed motherboard in a model older than 6-7 years - motherboards for older models can be harder to find and expensive relative to the value of the whole laptop. It's worth checking the price of a working unit of the same model on the used market before deciding.
  • Multiple simultaneous failures in a very old machine - if, besides the main fault, the laptop also has a weak battery, a slow drive and a processor too dated for today's use, fixing one part won't solve the overall performance problem.

Outside of these two cases - for the vast majority of failures (keyboard, display, fan, battery, case, touchpad) repairing is cheaper, faster and more environmentally friendly than replacing the whole laptop.

Is an old ThinkPad (2015-2020) still worth repairing?

Yes, more often than you'd think. ThinkPads from this period (e.g. T470, T480, X270, T580) still have spare parts readily available, a solid build (magnesium roll-cage in the T/X/P series) and Intel 6th-8th gen processors, which are enough for office work, browsing and most tasks outside gaming or heavy video editing. Replacing a battery or display in such a model for 150-300 zł is often the best price-to-performance ratio on the market - a new laptop of similar build quality costs several thousand złoty.

DIY repair or a service center - which is more cost-effective?

The vast majority of ThinkPad repairs (keyboard, battery, palmrest, fan) involve removing a dozen or so screws and swapping one module - no soldering or specialized equipment required. If you feel up to it, a DIY repair means paying only for the part (typically 50-70% cheaper than a service center, where labor is added on top). For every part we sell, we match the exact FRU number for your model - we described this in our guide How to read a Lenovo FRU number.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth repairing a laptop that's already 8-10 years old?

It depends on the fault and the intended use. For simple tasks (documents, browser, email), a 10-year-old ThinkPad with a replaced battery and an added SSD still works fine and costs a fraction of a new machine's price. For more demanding work, it's worth considering a newer model instead.

Does repairing a laptop shorten its lifespan compared to a new one?

No, as long as you use original or fully compatible parts matched by FRU number. A replaced fan or keyboard lasts just as long as the factory component of the same type.

How do I know if the problem is really a hardware fault and not the operating system?

It's worth first ruling out software causes (updating drivers, resetting settings, testing on a different user account) - that costs nothing. Only if the problem persists despite that is it likely a hardware fault requiring a part replacement.
