In short: before buying a new ThinkPad keyboard, check whether the problem is actually software-related (settings, driver) or a mechanical issue that can be fixed without a replacement (spill, crumbs under the keys). An actual keyboard replacement is only needed when several keys fail at once, the problem appeared after a liquid spill, or keys are physically stuck. Below, step by step, how to check this in 10 minutes.

Before buying a keyboard - rule out software causes

The first thing to rule out before thinking about a replacement: whether the problem is actually hardware at all. Symptoms like "the whole keyboard doesn't work" or "it types the wrong characters" very often have a software cause:

  1. Check on the Windows login screen - if the keyboard doesn't work even before you log in (on the login screen), the problem is hardware. If it works there but not inside the system, it's the driver or settings.
  2. Plug in a USB keyboard - if an external keyboard has the same issues, it's not the laptop keyboard's fault, it's the operating system.
  3. Check the keyboard layout in Windows - "typing the wrong characters" (e.g. z instead of y) is often a changed keyboard layout (US instead of PL), not a fault.
  4. Update or reinstall the keyboard driver in Device Manager - sometimes the driver gets lost after a Windows update.

How do I recognize a mechanical keyboard fault?

If the above didn't help, check the specific symptoms - each points to a different cause:

A single key doesn't work or "clicks in the air"

This is usually a damaged scissor mechanism on a single key (e.g. after the key popped off and was reattached) or a crumb/hair under the key blocking full travel. It's worth gently removing the key itself (on most ThinkPads keys can be removed without tools) and checking whether the mechanism underneath is intact. If it is, cleaning is often enough - no need to replace the whole keyboard.

Several adjacent keys don't work

This is usually a problem with the membrane/cable under the keyboard in that specific row or section - a sign the whole keyboard needs replacing, since the membrane is a single component.

Keys feel "mushy" after a liquid spill

Even a small amount of liquid (coffee, water) under the keyboard eventually causes contact corrosion. If you turned the laptop off immediately after the spill, turned it upside down and let it dry for 24-48 hours, the keyboard may still return to normal. If the problem only appeared days or weeks after the spill (progressive corrosion), a replacement is usually necessary.

The whole keyboard doesn't respond, but the rest of the laptop works fine

If an external USB keyboard works normally (see above), but the built-in one doesn't respond at all even after checking the driver, it's usually a faulty keyboard-to-motherboard cable connector rather than the keyboard itself. It's worth checking whether the cable is properly seated (visible after removing the palmrest) before buying a new keyboard.

How do I choose the right replacement keyboard?

ThinkPad keyboards differ between models and generations - not just in key layout (QWERTY/QWERTZ), but also in mounting and shape. Sometimes the same keyboard fits several neighboring models (e.g. the same platform across generations), and sometimes it doesn't even fit between consecutive generations of the same model. The most reliable way to choose:

  • Check the FRU number on the underside of the current keyboard (visible after gently lifting it) - we described this in our guide How to read a Lenovo FRU number.
  • If you don't have access to the old keyboard (e.g. it's completely unresponsive), find your model's page in our store - most current ThinkPads have a dedicated parts list in the "Palmrest, keyboard, touchpad" section, including color and backlight variants.
  • Pay attention to backlighting - a backlit and non-backlit keyboard for the same model have different FRU numbers and are usually not interchangeable despite looking identical from the outside.

Is replacing a keyboard difficult?

On most ThinkPads, the keyboard is screwed in from the bottom of the case with a few screws and connected with one or two ribbon cables (no soldering) - it's one of the simplest laptop repairs, typically 15-20 minutes including removing the bottom cover. Older models (up to around 2015) often had the keyboard replaceable from the top without removing the entire bottom, which is even simpler.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean the keyboard without disassembling it?

Partially - compressed air blown at an angle under the keys to remove crumbs helps in mild cases. For thorough cleaning after a sticky liquid spill (e.g. sweet tea, juice) disassembly is needed though, since the sticky residue stays under the keys.

Why do some keys type double characters?

This is usually a worn or dirty mechanism on that specific key causing a double signal bounce (debounce), not a fault in the whole keyboard. It's worth trying to clean that particular key before deciding to replace the whole thing.

Can a keyboard from a different Lenovo laptop fit "close enough" even if the FRU number differs?

Sometimes it physically fits, but a different FRU number usually means a different ribbon cable connector layout or different mounting - you risk some keys not working or being unable to mount the part correctly. Always choose by the FRU number dedicated to your model.
