Lenovo ThinkPad Mobile Workstations - History of the P Series and Its Predecessors
In the ThinkPad world, the P series holds a special place. These are mobile workstations - computers built for tasks a standard business laptop cannot handle: CAD design, 3D graphics, video editing and engineering calculations. Their history, however, does not start with the P50.
The P series is the top tier of ThinkPads, aimed mainly at CAD and 3D professionals. If you are looking for a ThinkPad for typical office work, first check how the T, L and E series differ.

The beginning: ThinkPads with professional graphics (A series)
The first workstation-class ThinkPads appeared in the early 2000s in the A series, still under the IBM brand. Models with a "p" suffix, such as the A31p, offered a professional ATI FireGL graphics card instead of a consumer chip. They set the direction later taken by the W and P series.
W series: the "Workstation" line (2008-2015)
In 2008 Lenovo introduced the W series, where the letter literally stood for "Workstation". The first models, the W500 (15.4") and W700 (17"), offered NVIDIA Quadro or ATI FireGL graphics and professional-grade components.
Later generations include:
- W510 (2010), W520 (2011), W530 (2012) - Intel Core i7 processors, NVIDIA Quadro graphics, up to 32 GB RAM in four slots
- W540 (2013) and W541 (2014) - displays up to 2880×1620, Quadro K1100M/K2100M graphics
- W550s (2015) - a lighter design based on the T550, the last model with the W letter
The W series used Intel Core i7 processors. Xeon CPUs and ECC memory arrived in ThinkPads only with the P series. Used W530 and W541 units are still popular on the secondhand market.
Transition to the P series (from 2015)
In 2015 the W series was replaced by the P series. The P50 (15.6") and P70 (17.3") were the first ThinkPads to offer optional Intel Xeon processors and ECC memory, along with ISV certifications for CAD software. Later generations:
- P50 / P70 (2015) - Xeon E3 v5 or Core i7, Quadro M-series graphics
- P51 / P71 (2017) - Xeon E3 v6 or 7th gen Core i7, Quadro graphics (up to P5000 in the P71)
- P52 / P72 (2018) and P53 / P73 (2019) - 8th and 9th gen Intel processors, Quadro RTX graphics in the P53
- P1 (from 2018) - a slim 15.6" workstation in X1 Carbon style, noticeably lighter than the P52/P53
- P15 / P17 (from 2020) - successors to the P53/P73, followed by the P16 from 2022
- P14s / P15s / P16s - lighter mobile workstations with professional graphics, based on the T series
Parts for specific models are collected on the page ThinkPad P series - all models.
What defines the P series
- ISV certification - official certification from CAD/3D software vendors (including Autodesk, Dassault Systèmes, PTC, Siemens)
- ECC memory - error-correcting memory in Xeon configurations, important for long calculations
- Professional graphics - NVIDIA Quadro / RTX with certified drivers instead of consumer GeForce
- Cooling - designed for sustained load
- Serviceability - easy RAM, storage and battery replacement in most models
The secondhand market: why the P series holds its value
Used P50, P51, P52 or P1 units are an excellent buy. Companies usually lease them for a few years, after which they reach the secondhand market at a fraction of the original price. With an SSD and fresh thermal paste, such a machine still handles CAD and video editing well.
What to check in a used unit:
- Fans - workstations run hot under load, and fans get dirty and wear out
- Battery - after a few years its capacity is clearly lower
- GPU and CPU temperatures - replacing thermal paste often removes throttling
