Replacing a Single Key on a Lenovo Laptop - Is It Possible?
A key falling off is one of the most common, and also one of the least serious, keyboard faults - and in most cases it does NOT require replacing the whole keyboard.
How a laptop key is built
Modern chiclet-style laptop keyboards have a scissor switch mechanism under each key - two X-shaped plastic pieces that keep the key level and transfer the press down to the membrane below. A key usually falls off when one of the scissor mechanism's retaining clips cracks or pops out of its base.
When you can replace just the key
If the scissor mechanism under the key is intact (visible, not cracked, still attached to the keyboard), it's often enough to buy just the "keycap" (the key top) with a matching mechanism and snap it back on - without touching the rest of the keyboard. This is the cheapest and fastest fix, but it requires a precise match: key size and shape vary between generations of the same model, so the FRU number of the whole keyboard (used to identify the matching key) is essential here.
When the whole keyboard needs replacing
- The scissor mechanism is cracked or missing (lost when the key came off)
- Special non-standard-size keys (spacebar, Enter, Shift) - these have an extra metal stabilizer wire, harder to fix yourself
- Several keys stop working at the same time - usually a sign of a fault in the membrane/cable under the keyboard, not a single mechanism
- Liquid spilled on the keyboard - even if it still works now, the membrane underneath may corrode and the keyboard may stop working later
Is it worth it?
The price of a single keycap with mechanism is usually a fraction of the price of a whole keyboard, so for a single fallen-off key (with no other symptoms) it's worth trying this cheaper fix before deciding to replace the entire keyboard.
