How to find the right replacement part for a Lenovo laptop - a 6-step checklist

Short answer: the model name alone is not enough to order a Lenovo part. Find the machine type (MTM) and serial number on the bottom label, confirm the exact model and generation (Intel or AMD), and read the FRU number from the old part if you can. Then check the variant that matters for that part: backlight and layout for keyboards, connector and touch for screens, processor and RAM for motherboards, integrated or dedicated graphics for fans. A matching FRU number (or an official substitute FRU) is the only reliable proof that a part fits.

Updated October 2026. Based on Lenovo service documentation (Hardware Maintenance Manuals, PSREF) and our daily work matching original Lenovo parts.

Step 1: find the machine type (MTM) and serial number

Turn the laptop over and read the label: the machine type model (MTM, for example 20N2-xxxxxx) and the serial number (S/N). You can also find them in the BIOS or with a Windows command. The MTM tells you the exact model and generation, which the marketing name often does not. How to find them step by step: serial number and machine type.

Step 2: confirm the exact model, generation and platform

Many Lenovo names cover several different machines. "T14" alone means seven generations, and in many generations the Intel and AMD versions use different motherboards and cooling. Write down the full name, for example "ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (Intel)" or "IdeaPad 5 14ALC05". Related models sometimes share parts (for example many T14 and P14s parts), but only the FRU number confirms it.

Step 3: read the FRU number from the old part

Most original Lenovo parts carry a label with a FRU number (Field Replaceable Unit), a 7- or 10-character code such as 01YR215 or 5M11B95923. If you can read it on the old part, that is the most reliable way to order the right replacement. If the label is missing, look the part up by serial number in Lenovo's support parts list, or in the FRU list of the model's Hardware Maintenance Manual. More in our guide: how to read the FRU number.

Step 4: check the variant that matters for your part

The same model often has several versions of one part. These are the points where orders most often go wrong:

PartWhat must matchGuide
KeyboardBacklit or not, language layout, TrackPoint, with or without palmrestKeyboard, layout
Screen (LCD)Size, resolution, connector (30 or 40 pin eDP), touch or non-touch, mountingScreen

Step 5: check substitute FRU numbers

Lenovo often lists several FRU numbers for one position: different suppliers of the same keyboard or screen, or a newer revision. Official substitutes are interchangeable even though the number on the label is different. So "a different FRU" does not always mean "it will not fit", and "the same model name" does not always mean "it will fit". When in doubt, compare both FRU numbers in the model's parts list.

Step 6: if you are not sure, ask before ordering

Send us the MTM or serial number and, ideally, a photo of the label on the old part. We match parts by the exact model and FRU, not by name alone, and we will tell you which variant you need.

ThinkPad, IdeaPad and Legion parts - what is different?

All three families use FRU numbers. ThinkPads have detailed public Hardware Maintenance Manuals with full FRU lists, and related business models often share parts across a series. Consumer IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion lines have more variants per model (colours, screen types, graphics versions), so the exact model code (for example 15IAX10) and the FRU number matter even more. Workstation P-series laptops add certified graphics and more cooling variants, which makes the motherboard and fan the parts most often confused.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Lenovo part I need?

Start with the machine type (MTM) and serial number from the bottom label, confirm the exact model and generation, and read the FRU number from the old part. Then check the variant that matters for that part, such as backlight for a keyboard or connector and touch for a screen. A matching FRU or an official substitute FRU confirms the fit.

Is the laptop model name enough to order a part?

Usually not. One model name often covers several generations and Intel and AMD versions, and the same model has different versions of a part (for example backlit and non-backlit keyboards, touch and non-touch screens). Give the MTM or serial number, or the FRU from the old part.

What compatibility points should I check before buying a Lenovo replacement part?

Check the exact model and generation, the platform (Intel or AMD), the FRU number and the part variant: keyboard backlight and layout, screen connector and touch, processor and RAM on motherboards, integrated or dedicated graphics for fans, SSD length and type, adapter wattage and tip.

Do parts from a different generation fit?

Sometimes, when Lenovo kept the same part across generations, but you cannot assume it. Check whether the FRU number (or a substitute FRU) appears in the parts list of both generations before ordering.

Where can I find the FRU number if the old part has no label?

Look the part up by your serial number in Lenovo's support parts list, or in the FRU list in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your model. You can also send us the serial number and we will check it.

Are parts from a ThinkPad P series the same as from the T series?

Some thin P models share many parts with their T counterparts (for example the P14s and T14), but motherboards and cooling usually differ because of the workstation graphics. Check the FRU number for each part.
