In short: the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has many generations (Gen 1–13) that look similar (always 14") but use different, non-interchangeable parts — different cases, batteries, hinges, keyboards, and even the charging method. So the most important thing when buying parts is to correctly identify the generation. The most reliable way is the 4-character machine-type number on the label on the bottom of the laptop (e.g. 20KH, 20U9, 21CB). The table below maps the type to the generation and year.

How to identify your X1 Carbon generation?

  • Machine-type number — 4 characters on the label on the bottom (e.g. "20KH"). This is the most reliable way — see the table below.
  • Year of manufacture — each generation is a different model year (Gen 1 = 2012 … Gen 13 = 2025).
  • Diagonal — all X1 Carbons have a 14" screen, so the diagonal alone isn't enough to tell them apart.

What matters when choosing X1 Carbon parts?

  • The generation must match — cases, palmrest, hinges, keyboard and battery differ between generations and are generally not interchangeable. Choose a part described for your generation.
  • Charging method — generations 1–4 charge via a plug, and from Gen 5 (2017) only over USB-C / Thunderbolt. This matters e.g. for the power jack.
  • CMOS / BIOS battery — the X1 Carbon has its own backup batteries that depend on the generation (different from classic ThinkPads). We cover the choice in a separate guide: which CMOS battery for which ThinkPad.

Frequently asked questions about X1 Carbon parts

How do I identify the generation of my ThinkPad X1 Carbon?

Most reliably by the 4-character machine-type number on the label on the bottom of the laptop (e.g. 20KH = Gen 6, 20U9 = Gen 8, 21CB = Gen 10). The year of manufacture also helps. All X1 Carbons have a 14" screen, so the diagonal alone doesn't tell generations apart — use the table above.

Are parts from different X1 Carbon generations interchangeable?

Generally no. Successive generations have different cases, palmrests, hinges, keyboards and batteries, and from Gen 5 the charging method changed. So a part must be matched to the specific generation — best by the machine-type number or the part's FRU.

Which charger fits the X1 Carbon?

It depends on the generation. The X1 Carbon Gen 1–4 (2012–2016) charges via a classic plug, while from Gen 5 (2017) onwards it charges only over USB-C / Thunderbolt. Choose a charger matching your laptop's generation.

Which CMOS / BIOS battery fits the X1 Carbon?

The X1 Carbon has its own BIOS backup batteries, different from classic ThinkPads and depending on the generation (e.g. different for generations 2–4, different for 5–10, different for 12–13). The correct choice is covered in our guide "which CMOS battery for which ThinkPad".

How do I tell an X1 Carbon from a regular ThinkPad X series?

The X1 Carbon is a slim, light 14" ultrabook with a carbon-fibre case, whereas classic X-series models (e.g. the X270) are smaller (12.5") and heavier. The machine-type number and the "X1 Carbon" name on the label confirm the model unambiguously.
