In short: in a Lenovo ThinkPad X280 you can replace virtually every component — from the palmrest and battery, through cases, cables and the display, to the motherboard. It is a thin 12.5-inch ultrabook with USB-C charging. The most reliable way to match the right part is the FRU / Part Number printed on the original component. Below is the full list of X280 parts grouped by component — click to go to the offer.

Frequently asked questions about X280 parts

Do parts from the ThinkPad X270 fit the X280?

Usually NO. Despite the similar name, the X280 (2018) is a new, thinner design with USB-C charging — Lenovo redesigned the chassis compared with the X270 (which had a Slim Tip plug and a bottom-replaceable battery). Most X270 parts do not fit the X280. Choose components marked for the X280 directly, by FRU number. The A285 (the AMD version of the same chassis) is, however, a twin.

What battery does the X280 have?

The X280 has an internal, soldered-in battery — unlike the X270 it has NO bottom-replaceable battery and no Power Bridge system. Choose the matching cell by FRU number. Separately there is a small CMOS battery backing up the BIOS settings.

Which LCD display cable should I choose for the X280?

It depends on the panel — the X280 came with a Full HD panel, touch and non-touch, with an optional IR camera. Each type has its own eDP cable with a different FRU number; an incompatible cable = no image. First determine your display type, then choose an item from the Display, cables and hinges section.

Palmrest for the X280 — what to look out for?

The keyboard layout and the presence of a fingerprint reader. Choose a palmrest matching what you have. Available variants with FRU numbers are in the Palmrest, keyboard, touchpad section.

Which motherboard fits the X280?

The X280 used Intel 8th generation processors (Kaby Lake R, i5 / i7) with soldered memory. The board is soldered with the processor, so it is matched strictly by FRU number — check the marking of your current board or give us your configuration.

What charger does the X280 use?

Via USB-C (Power Delivery) — the X280 is the only 12.5" X-series generation with USB-C charging, between the Slim-Tip X270 and the later X390 / X13. You need a USB-C 65 W charger (or a more powerful one with PD). The old Slim Tip charger from the X270 does not fit.

How do I check the FRU number of an X280 part?

The FRU number (Part Number) is printed on the component itself — on the palmrest, cable or board. It is the most reliable way to choose. We described how to read it in our guide How to read a Lenovo FRU number.

Which X280 parts are replaced most often?

The most frequently replaced are the USB-C port (it wears out from plugging in the charger), the display cable and hinges, the palmrest and the battery. You will find all these items in the list above with their FRU numbers.
