Frequently asked questions about P51 parts

Do parts from the ThinkPad P50 or P52 fit the P51?

Partly. The P51 and P50 (predecessor) are very similar workstations (Kaby Lake / Skylake) — many chassis parts, cables and hinges are sometimes shared. The P52, however, is a newer, redesigned generation (Coffee Lake) and its parts usually do NOT fit. Also do not confuse it with the P51s — a thinner, different model. Match the motherboard and parts by FRU number.

What battery does the P51 have and which one to choose?

The P51 has an internal battery (about 90 Wh — it is a workstation). Choose the matching cell by the FRU number of your current battery. Separately there is a small CMOS battery backing up the BIOS settings (the CMOS batteries section above, if available).

Which LCD display cable should I choose for the P51?

It depends on the panel: the P51 came with a Full HD and a 4K UHD panel — each type has its own eDP cable with a different FRU number. An incompatible cable = no image, so first determine your display type, then choose an item from the Display, cables and hinges section.

Palmrest for the P51 — with or without a fingerprint reader?

Choose a palmrest matching your configuration: versions differ in the presence of a fingerprint reader and in the keyboard layout. Variants with FRU numbers are in the Palmrest, keyboard, touchpad section.

Which motherboard fits the P51?

The P51 is a workstation with Intel 7th generation processors (Kaby Lake, also Xeon) and a dedicated NVIDIA Quadro card (M1200 / M2200). The motherboard is matched strictly by FRU number — it differs by processor and graphics variant. Check the marking of your current board or give us your configuration.

What charger does the P51 use?

The P51 charges with a high-power Slim Tip (rectangular) adapter — usually 170 W, because a workstation with a Quadro card needs more power. Do not permanently use a weaker 65 W / 90 W adapter. USB-C charging will not power the P51.

How do I check the FRU number of a P51 part?

The FRU number (Part Number) is printed on the component itself — on the battery, palmrest, cable or board. It is the most reliable way to choose. We described how to read it in our guide How to read a Lenovo FRU number.

Which P51 parts are replaced most often?

The most frequently replaced are the fans (a workstation runs hot), the display cable and hinges, the palmrest and the bottom case. You will find all these items in the list above with their FRU numbers.
