Do parts from the ThinkPad T430 or T410 fit the T420?

Partly. The T420 shares much of its construction with the T410 (predecessor) and the T430 (successor). Note the keyboard: the T420 has the classic 7-row keyboard, while the T430 already has the island (chiclet) one — the palmrest and keyboard are not interchangeable between them. Match the motherboard by FRU number (T420 — Sandy Bridge).

What battery does the T420 have and which one to choose?

The T420 has a classic, removable battery mounted at the rear (6- or 9-cell); additionally an Ultrabay battery can be fitted in place of the optical drive. It is a design predating the Power Bridge system. Choose the variant by FRU number. Separately there is a small CMOS battery backing up the BIOS settings.

Which LCD display cable should I choose for the T420?

The T420 came with a 14" HD (1366×768) or HD+ (1600×900) panel. Each type has its own cable with a different FRU number; a mismatch = no image. First determine your display type, then choose an item from the Display, cables and hinges section.

Palmrest and keyboard for the T420 — what to look out for?

The T420 has the classic 7-row keyboard — the island one from the T430 does not fit. Choose a keyboard and palmrest matching your language layout. Variants with FRU numbers are in the Palmrest, keyboard, touchpad section.

Which motherboard fits the T420?

The T420 used Intel 2nd generation processors (Sandy Bridge), in i3 / i5 / i7 versions, with an optional NVIDIA NVS 4200M card. The motherboard is matched strictly by FRU number — check the marking of your current board or give us your configuration.

What charger does the T420 use?

The T420 charges with a classic round-barrel adapter (7.9 mm with a centre pin), usually 65 W or 90 W — an older generation predating the rectangular Slim Tip. Slim Tip adapters (T440 and newer) and USB-C do NOT fit the T420.

How do I check the FRU number of a T420 part?
