Touchpad Not Working After the Windows 11 Update - How to Fix It?

After upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11, many users run into the same problem: the touchpad suddenly stops responding, the cursor disappears, or the pointer freezes every few minutes.

At first glance this looks like a hardware fault - but in most cases the cause is software-related and can be fixed in 2 minutes.

Why does the touchpad stop working after Windows 11?

Windows 11 introduced a changed power management policy for HID (Human Interface Devices) and USB controllers. The system started shutting down input devices more aggressively in power-saving mode - and older touch controllers (Synaptics, Elan, I2C HID) don't always wake up correctly after such a shutdown.

The result: the touchpad turns off and stops responding until the computer is restarted. This especially affects laptops originally sold with Windows 10 that were later upgraded to Windows 11.

Which models are most affected?

• ThinkPad T470, T470s, T480, T480s - the most frequently reported issue
• ThinkPad E480, E580, E490, E590
• ThinkPad L480, L580, L490, L590
• ThinkPad T440, T450, T460 - older series
• IdeaPad 3, IdeaPad 5 (2019-2021 generations)
• Yoga 530, 730 and other Windows-10-era convertibles

Step-by-step fix

1. Open Device Manager
   Right-click Start and choose Device Manager, or press Win+R, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
2. Find the touchpad in the device list
   Expand the Mice and other pointing devices section. Look for an entry named Touchpad, Clickpad, I2C HID Device, or the manufacturer's name (Synaptics SMBus TouchPad, ELAN I2C Touchpad).
3. Disable power management for the touchpad
   Right-click the touchpad entry - Properties - Power Management tab. Uncheck:
   "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
   Click OK.
4. Repeat for the I2C controller (if applicable)
   Under System devices find the Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller entries. There may be 2-3 of them - disable power management for each one the same way as in step 3.
5. Restart the computer
   After the restart, the touchpad should work reliably.

What if that doesn't help?

• Uninstall the touchpad driver - in Device Manager, right-click - Uninstall device. Restart - Windows will install the default HID driver.
• Check the BIOS - enter BIOS setup (F1 key at startup on ThinkPad) and make sure the Internal Pointing Device option is Enabled.
• Update the drivers manually - download the touchpad driver directly from support.lenovo.com by searching for your model.

When does the touchpad need replacing?

If the methods above don't help, it may indicate physical damage to the touchpad or the cable connecting it to the motherboard. Signs pointing to a hardware fault:

• the touchpad doesn't respond at all (even right after a restart)
• clicking works but the touch surface doesn't - or the other way round
• the touchpad only responds in one corner
• the cursor jitters or moves on its own
