RAM is one of the most cost-effective upgrades for an older laptop. If your laptop has 4–8 GB of RAM and you work with multiple applications, a browser with 20+ tabs, or graphics editing — upgrading to 16 GB or 32 GB can significantly improve performance. However, not all laptops allow upgrades, and choosing the right memory is critical. This guide explains everything.

Symptoms of Insufficient RAM

  • Your laptop stutters and runs slowly: Windows uses the disk (SSD) as virtual memory (swap) — this is significantly slower than real RAM.
  • You browse with 20+ tabs open and the system freezes: browsers consume RAM; each tab uses roughly 100–300 MB.
  • You open Photoshop, video editing software, or CAD and the computer clearly slows down: these applications demand a lot of RAM — 8 GB is the minimum for professionals.
  • In Task Manager you see "Memory: 99% usage": this is the clearest sign that RAM is maxed out.

DDR4 vs DDR5 — What's the Difference?

DDR4 (Double Data Rate 4):

  • When it appeared: ~2014–2015. Still the standard in laptops through 2023–2024.
  • Speed: Typically 2400 MT/s, 2666 MT/s, 3200 MT/s (MT = Million Transfers per second).
  • Where: ThinkPad T480–T14 Gen 5, IdeaPad 5, Legion 5 with Intel 10th–12th gen processors, AMD Ryzen 3000–5000.
  • Price: ~$15–40 USD for 8 GB, ~$30–80 USD for 16 GB.

DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5):

  • When it appeared: ~2022. Modern standard for laptops with Intel 13+ gen, AMD Ryzen 7000+.
  • Speed: Typically 4800 MT/s, 5200 MT/s, 5600 MT/s (significantly faster than DDR4).
  • Differences:
    • DDR5 is ~30–40% faster in pure RAM benchmarks, but real-world performance gain for average users is ~5–15%.
    • DDR5 consumes less power (1.1V vs 1.2V for DDR4), which may slightly extend battery life.
  • Where: ThinkPad T14 Gen 6, X1 Carbon Gen 13, Legion 9, latest IdeaPads.
  • Price: ~$40–70 USD for 8 GB, ~$70–140 USD for 16 GB (more expensive than DDR4).

IMPORTANT: DDR4 and DDR5 use completely different slots — you cannot insert a DDR4 SODIMM into a laptop with DDR5, even if they look physically similar.

SODIMM vs UDIMM — What's the Difference?

SODIMM (Small Outline DIMM):

  • Size: Small module, ~7.5 cm long.
  • Where: Almost all laptops. This is the notebook standard.
  • Slots: Usually 1–2 slots (rarely more).

UDIMM (Unbuffered DIMM):

  • Size: Large module, ~15 cm long.
  • Where: Workstations, servers — NOT laptops.
  • Note: If you have a laptop, don't look for UDIMM, because you won't be able to use it.

Soldered vs Removable — Critical Question

Soldered (soldered directly to the motherboard):

  • Appearance: RAM is soldered to the motherboard — you cannot remove it without destroying it.
  • Where: Almost all MacBooks, some ThinkPads (T14 Gen 6, X1 Carbon Gen 13 — PART of RAM is soldered).
  • Upgrade: Impossible. If your laptop has 8 GB soldered RAM and 1 SODIMM slot, the max is 8GB (soldered) + 48GB (slot) = 56GB. But if all 16GB are soldered — that's it, no upgrade possible.

Removable (SODIMM slots):

  • Appearance: The RAM module inserts into a slot and clips in on the sides.
  • Where: Older ThinkPads (T470–T490, T14 Gen 1–5), older IdeaPads, Legion.
  • Upgrade: Possible — you can replace or add a new module.

VERY IMPORTANT: Check your laptop's service manual (available on Lenovo's support page) to see whether RAM is soldered, in SODIMM slots, or a combination. A mistake at this step = wasted money on an incompatible module.

Checking Your Current Setup

Windows:

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
  2. Go to the "Performance" tab → "Memory".
  3. You'll see "X.X GB / Y.Y GB available". At the bottom, you may see details (DDR4 or DDR5, speed, etc.).
  4. Alternative: Open msinfo32.exe (Win+R, type it) — look for the "Installed Physical Memory" section.

Linux:

  • cat /proc/meminfo — shows total available memory.
  • dmidecode -t memory (root) — detailed info about each module (type, speed, size).
  • lshw -C memory (root) — similar info, more readable.

System Information (Windows):

  1. Open "System Information" (Win+Pause or Settings → System).
  2. Look for "Installed RAM" — shows total capacity.
  3. Unfortunately, Windows System Information usually does NOT show RAM type (DDR4 vs DDR5) — you need Task Manager or HWiNFO64.

HWiNFO64 (free third-party app):

  1. Download and run HWiNFO64.
  2. Look for the "Memory" section — it will show exactly each RAM module, its type, speed, and capacity.

Checking Maximum Capacity per Series

  • ThinkPad T470–T490: Max 32 GB (usually 2 slots x 16 GB SODIMM DDR4-2400/2666/3200).
  • ThinkPad T14 Gen 1–5: Max 32 GB (usually SODIMM).
  • ThinkPad T14 Gen 6: 8GB soldered + 1 SODIMM slot = max 56 GB (8GB + 48GB).
  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1–5: Max 16 GB, rarely more (always soldered or very limited slots).
  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 6+: 8GB soldered + 1 slot = max 56 GB.
  • ThinkPad P series (workstations): Usually max 64 GB+ (depends on generation).
  • IdeaPad (older): Max 16–32 GB (usually 2 slots).
  • Legion (gaming): Max 32–64 GB (depends on generation and model).

Dual-Channel vs Single-Channel — Real Impact on Performance

Dual-Channel (2 modules of the same size, e.g., 2x8GB = 16GB):

  • What it means: Two RAM modules work in parallel, providing wider bandwidth for data.
  • Performance: ~10–15% faster than single-channel in pure benchmarks, but for average users the difference is barely noticeable.
  • Gaming: In games this can mean ~5–10 FPS more (e.g., 80 FPS vs 85 FPS).
  • Where it matters: Integrated graphics (iGPU) use system RAM — dual-channel can give more there. AMD Ryzen depends more on dual-channel than Intel.

Single-Channel (1 module, e.g., 1x16GB = 16GB):

  • Performance: Slightly slower, but in daily use the difference is minimal.
  • Where you find it: Laptops sold with 1x8GB or 1x12GB, where the user buys a second module later.

Tip: If you have 2 slots — always buy 2 modules of the same size (e.g., 2x16GB instead of 1x32GB). If you have 1 slot with 8GB soldered, you won't get dual-channel, but that's okay — 8GB soldered + 32GB SODIMM is still a good solution.

How Much RAM Do You Need? Practical Guide

  • 4–8 GB: Older laptops, web browsing, Office work. Nowadays too little — if you work with 20+ browser tabs, you'll struggle.
  • 8–16 GB: The "sweet spot" for most users. Good for browsing, Office, Photoshop, programming. Indie games, 1080p video editing — okay.
  • 16–32 GB: Professionals (4K video editing, CAD, data science, compiling large projects). High-end gamers. Developers with large IDEs and multiple background processes.
  • 32 GB+: Very extreme workloads (3D rendering, machine learning, running multiple VMs). For average users, this is a waste of money.

My recommendation: If an upgrade makes sense, go for 16 GB (if you have 8 GB) or 32 GB (if you have 16 GB). Don't overdo it.

How to Buy the Right RAM Module?

Gather exact specifications:

  1. Laptop model: ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 (MTM 21NS), IdeaPad 5 15ABR8, etc.
  2. RAM type: DDR4 or DDR5?
  3. Capacity per slot: How many GB can a single slot handle?
  4. Speed: 2666 MT/s, 3200 MT/s, 4800 MT/s, 5600 MT/s?
  5. Number of slots: How many SODIMM slots do you have? (usually 1–2)

Where to buy?

  • In our shop we have RAM modules for all Lenovo laptops — DDR4, DDR5, various capacities.
  • Kingston, Corsair, Crucial are trusted manufacturers. Avoid unknown brands from questionable sources — they may be counterfeits or used.

Compatibility — check before buying:

  1. Enter your laptop model into a RAM manufacturer's compatibility finder (e.g., Kingston Memory Finder).
  2. It should show you a list of compatible modules.
  3. Alternative: in our shop, type your laptop model — we filter the right modules for you.

RAM Replacement — Practical Instructions

Step 1: Preparation

  1. Power off the laptop, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery (if removable).
  2. Work on an anti-static mat or wear a grounded wrist strap — static discharge can damage the module.

Step 2: Access to RAM

  1. Open the bottom panel (usually 1–4 small screws).
  2. Locate the SODIMM slots — these are narrow sockets with blue clips on the ends.

Step 3: Removing Old RAM (if any)

  1. Spread the blue clips on both sides of the slot.
  2. The RAM module should tilt — carefully pull it out.

Step 4: Installing New RAM

  1. Align the module — it has notches that match "keys" in the slot (you can't insert it backward).
  2. Push the module into the slot at a ~45° angle, then press it flat — it should click into place.
  3. The blue clips should close automatically.

Step 5: Testing

  1. Close the bottom panel and power on the laptop.
  2. Windows/Linux should automatically recognize the new RAM.
  3. Check Task Manager or System Information — it should show the new total capacity (e.g., 16 GB instead of 8 GB).

Summary — Is the Upgrade Worth It?

  • YES — upgrade makes sense if:
    • You have 4–8 GB and work with multiple applications/tabs.
    • System shows "Memory: 80%+ used" in Task Manager.
    • The laptop is still useful (GPU, CPU, SSD in good shape).
    • Upgrade cost: ~$30–100 USD — far cheaper than a new laptop.
  • NO — upgrade doesn't make sense if:
    • All RAM is soldered and you can't remove it.
    • The laptop is too old and other components already limit it (HDD, weak GPU).
    • You only use it for browsing and Office — 8 GB is fine.
