Lenovo Laptop Main Battery - How to Choose the Right One?

This is the most common question in our shop - and the easiest one to mix up with another part. This guide covers the main battery that powers the laptop (the one that holds several hours of charge), not the CMOS/BIOS battery (the small "coin cell" that keeps the clock and settings - separate guide here).

Internal or removable battery?

Older ThinkPads (up to roughly 2016, e.g. T440-T460, X220-X250) have an externally removable battery - popped out with a latch, no disassembly needed, and often available in an extended/slice capacity version. Newer models (T470 and later, X1 Carbon from Gen 5, the whole E14/E15 line, IdeaPad, Legion) have an internal battery mounted with screws under the bottom cover - replacement requires opening the laptop.

Why the model name alone isn't enough

The same model (e.g. T480) was produced with batteries of different capacities (physically different sizes) depending on the configuration the original buyer ordered - typically 24Wh, 48Wh or 72Wh for the T480. Ordering "a battery for T480" without the FRU number risks getting a part that doesn't fit the case or the connector.

How to check your battery's FRU number

  • The sticker on the battery itself (visible after removing the bottom cover, or immediately if the battery is externally removable)
  • In Windows: run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt - it generates a report with the battery model
  • Lenovo Vantage - the "Hardware Settings" tab shows battery details

Signs the battery needs replacing

Fast draining, the laptop shuts down despite showing charge remaining, swelling (a visibly raised touchpad or palmrest - stop using the laptop and replace the battery as soon as possible, a swollen lithium-polymer battery is a fire risk), Windows message "Consider replacing your battery."

Our battery category has original batteries for every Lenovo series - with a 12-month warranty, tested before shipping. Send us the FRU number or your laptop's serial number and we'll match the correct model.
