Touchpad Not Working After Windows 11 Update - How to Fix It on Lenovo
Why does the touchpad stop working after Windows 11?
The most common cause is power management: Windows turns off the touchpad or its I2C controller to save battery, and an older controller does not always wake up correctly afterwards. The result is a touchpad that only works after a restart, and only for a while.
If a restart helps only temporarily and the settings below change nothing, the cause may be mechanical wear of the touchpad, described in our touchpad replacement guide. The problem shows up most often on laptops that shipped with Windows 10 and were later upgraded to Windows 11, for example ThinkPad E480 or L480.
Solution - step by step
-
Open Device Manager
Right-click Start and select Device Manager, or press Win+R, typedevmgmt.mscand press Enter. -
Find the touchpad in the device list
Expand Mice and other pointing devices. Look for an entry named Touchpad, Clickpad, I2C HID Device or a vendor name (e.g. Synaptics, ELAN). -
Disable power management for the touchpad
Right-click the touchpad entry → Properties → Power Management tab. Uncheck:
"Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
Click OK. (If there is no such tab, go to the next step.) -
Repeat for the I2C controller (if present)
In System devices, find the Serial IO I2C Host Controller entries. There may be several; disable power management for each of them in the same way. -
Restart the computer
After the restart, check whether the touchpad works reliably.
What if this does not help?
- Reinstall the touchpad driver - in Device Manager right-click the entry → Uninstall device, then restart. Windows will install a driver again automatically.
- Check the BIOS - enter BIOS setup (F1 at startup on ThinkPad) and make sure the internal pointing device / TrackPad is set to Enabled.
- Install the driver from Lenovo - download the touchpad driver for your exact model from support.lenovo.com or via Lenovo Vantage instead of relying only on Windows Update.
When does the touchpad need replacing?
If none of the above helps, the touchpad itself or the ribbon cable connecting it to the motherboard may be damaged. Signs of a hardware fault:
- The touchpad does not respond at all, even right after a restart
- Clicking works but touch does not, or the other way round
- The touchpad responds only in part of its surface
- The cursor drifts or moves by itself
Replacing a touchpad is usually a straightforward repair. In our store you will find touchpads matched to specific Lenovo models, with a warranty.
Not sure which touchpad fits your laptop? Send us the serial number - it is on the sticker under the laptop, in Lenovo Vantage, or you can read it in PowerShell with Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS - and we will find the exact part.
