Lenovo Laptop Charger - How to Choose the Right Wattage?
Lenovo chargers vary by power (wattage), connector type, and - in newer models - the USB-C charging protocol. Choosing the wrong charger can result in slower charging, reduced processor performance, or in extreme cases no charging at all.
Typical wattages by segment
- 45W - the lightest ultrabooks (older X1 Carbon, X250/X260)
- 65W - the standard for most ThinkPad T/E/L models and IdeaPad
- 90W - models with a more powerful processor or entry-level dedicated graphics
- 135W / 170W - P-series mobile workstations (P15, P50-P53) and Legion models with a GPU
- 230W - the most powerful Legion and P-series configurations with a top-tier GPU
Can you use a charger with a different wattage?
A charger with higher wattage than the original usually works safely - the laptop draws only as much current as it needs, and the surplus simply isn't used. A charger with LOWER wattage than required may overheat, or the laptop may fail to charge under load (e.g. it runs on the charger, but the battery doesn't charge, or drains despite being plugged in). The connector must physically match regardless of wattage.
Three connector types
- Round barrel (the "old" round tip) - models up to around 2013-2014 (T430, X230, T530 and older)
- Slim-tip (rectangular, yellow trim) - the standard roughly 2014-2018 (T440-T480, X1 Carbon Gen 1-5)
- USB-C (Power Delivery) - models from roughly 2017-2018 onward (X1 Carbon Gen 6+, T490 and newer, most current IdeaPad/Legion)
USB-C chargers have an extra advantage: the same charger (with sufficient wattage) often fits many different models and brands, because it's a universal standard - unlike the slim-tip and round barrel connectors, which are Lenovo-specific.
