In short: whether you can replace the charging port in a Lenovo laptop in 10 minutes with a screwdriver, or whether a soldering station is needed, depends on the era the model comes from. Round and rectangular power jacks (ThinkPads up to around 2018) sit on a separate cable that plugs into the motherboard. USB-C ports in models from around 2018-2024 (T480, T490, T14, X1 Carbon 6-8, ThinkBook) are soldered to the motherboard. The newest models, e.g. the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7, return to replaceable USB-C modules.
Below we show how to identify the design in your model, how to make sure the port - not the adapter or battery - is at fault, and what this means when buying parts.
Three (actually four) eras of charging ports in Lenovo laptops
| Era | Plug type | Example models | How the port is mounted | Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to around 2013 | Round | T60, T61, T400, T410, T420, T430, T510-T530, X60, X61, X200-X230, W500 | On a separate cable or in a separate module | ✅ Screwdriver, no soldering |
| Around 2013-2019 | Rectangular (Slim Tip) | T440-T470, T460s, T470s, T540p, T570, P51s, X240-X270, L450-L470, X1 Carbon Gen 3, P50-P53, X1 Extreme and P1 (Gen 1-6) | Jack on a short cable plugged into the board | ✅ Screwdriver, no soldering |
| Around 2018-2024 | USB-C | T480, T580, T490, T590, T14 / T15 (up to Gen 5), X280, T480s, T490s, T14s, X1 Carbon Gen 6-8, ThinkBook 14 / 15 (Gen 1-5) | Connector soldered to the motherboard | ⚠️ Micro-soldering (service) |
| From 2025 | USB-C (module) | ThinkPad T14 Gen 7, T16 Gen 5, P1 Gen 8 | Replaceable USB-C port module | ✅ Module swap |
Some laptops of the second era (e.g. T470, X270, T570) have both a rectangular jack and a USB-C port that can also charge. Damage to one of them therefore does not cut off charging completely.
Eras 1 and 2: jack on a cable - a simple replacement
The power jack is fixed in the chassis and connected to the board with a short cable ending in a plug. The replacement means removing the bottom cover, unplugging the old cable and plugging in the new one. Lenovo gives these jacks their own FRU numbers, e.g.:
- ThinkPad X240 / X250 - FRU 04X5358,
- ThinkPad T570 / P51s - FRU 01ER026 (jack with cable),
- ThinkPad T460s / T470s - FRU 01ER108,
- ThinkPad X1 Extreme / P1 - FRU 01YU754,
- ThinkPad T420 - FRU 04W1635, X220 / X230 - FRU 04W1680.
In some models the jack bracket also comes in handy - when it cracks, the jack wobbles and the plug loses contact. Such brackets are separate small parts (e.g. for the P52 / P53 or the X220 / X230).
Era 3: USB-C soldered to the board - a service repair
In ThinkPads from the T480 / X280 / X1 Carbon Gen 6 up to the T14 Gen 5, the USB-C port used for charging is soldered directly to the motherboard. This is confirmed, among others, by iFixit's repairability assessment of the T14 Gen 5. A damaged port does not mean the whole board must be replaced, though: an experienced repair shop desolders the old connector with a hot-air station and solders in a new one. This is a component-level repair that requires equipment and skill - not something you do with a screwdriver.
For such repairs we sell original USB-C connectors, including for the ThinkPad T480 / T580 / T490 / T590 / T14 Gen 1 / T15, for the X280 / T480s / T490s / T14s / T14 Gen 2, for the X1 Carbon Gen 6-8 and for the ThinkBook 14 / 15 Gen 1-5.
Do not confuse the charging port with the USB board. In many ThinkPads (e.g. T490, T14, T14s, X13) the regular USB-A ports sit on a separate board connected by a ribbon cable. Such a board is replaced without soldering, but it has nothing to do with charging - the USB-C power port in these models is on the motherboard.
Era 4: USB-C modules are back
In its newest ThinkPads Lenovo has started fitting the USB-C port as a replaceable module - the port is the part that wears out fastest, so its failure no longer requires a board replacement. According to iFixit, the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 and T16 Gen 5 have this solution (repairability score 10/10), and according to Notebookcheck so does the P1 Gen 8.
What about IdeaPads, ThinkBooks and Legions?
There is no single rule here. In some IdeaPad models the DC jack is on a separate cable (we have them e.g. for the IdeaPad 5 14IIL05 - FRU 5C10Y89064 - and the IdeaPad 720-15 - FRU 5C10P26267), in others the USB-C port is on the board. For Legions and ThinkBooks we check the design in the service documentation of the specific model - give us the machine type.
Is the port really at fault? Step-by-step diagnosis
Before you order a port, rule out cheaper and more common causes. Lack of charging is just as often caused by the adapter, the cable or the battery settings.
- Try another, working adapter of the right wattage. An adapter with too little power can keep the laptop running but not charge the battery under load. How to choose the wattage is described in our guide Lenovo laptop adapter - which wattage.
- Inspect the plug and the port. A bent centre pin, dirt, lint in the USB-C port, signs of melting - these are clear signs of mechanical damage.
- The "wiggle test". If the laptop charges only when the plug is tilted one way, or charging cuts out with a slight movement - the port or its bracket is at fault.
- Check the battery-saving settings. The message "plugged in, not charging" with the battery charged to e.g. 60-80% is often deliberate: charge thresholds in Lenovo Vantage (ThinkPad) or the battery conservation mode (IdeaPad). It is not a fault.
- Watch the charging LED by the port or on the front of the chassis. No reaction at all from the LED after connecting a working adapter points to the port, the port cable or the charging circuit on the board.
- Rule out the battery. The laptop runs on the adapter but the battery does not charge or shows 0%? The problem may be the battery itself - see our guide battery diagnostics and replacement.
If the laptop still does not charge after the port has been replaced, the charging circuit on the motherboard is most likely damaged. General "won't turn on / won't charge" diagnostics are described in our guide Lenovo laptop won't turn on or charge.
Replacing a jack on a cable - what it looks like
- Disconnect the adapter. If the battery is removable - remove it. In models with an internal battery, disable it in the BIOS (the option to disable the built-in battery in ThinkPad Setup) or unplug its connector from the board right after removing the bottom cover.
- Remove the bottom cover (the screws usually stay in the cover thanks to retaining washers).
- Unplug the jack cable connector from the motherboard.
- Take the jack out of its seat in the chassis (often held by a metal bracket with a single screw).
- Insert the new jack, route the cable the same way as the old one and plug the connector into the board.
- Reassemble the chassis, connect the adapter and check charging while gently moving the plug.
Frequently asked questions
Can the USB-C charging port in a ThinkPad T480 be replaced?
Yes, but only by resoldering. In the T480 the USB-C charging port is soldered to the motherboard. An experienced repair shop replaces just the connector, without replacing the whole board. We stock the original connector for the T480 / T580 / T490 / T590 / T14 Gen 1 / T15.
The laptop only charges when I hold the plug. What is broken?
Most often the port or its bracket - the contact inside is worn or the jack has cracked. Less often the adapter plug itself is damaged. Check with another working adapter: if the symptom remains, the port is at fault.
I have a ThinkPad T470 with two ports. Which one charges?
Both. The T470 (like the X270 and T570) charges through the rectangular Slim Tip jack and through the USB-C port. If one stops working, the other still lets you charge the laptop.
Can I charge a ThinkPad with a USB-C phone charger?
The charger must support USB Power Delivery and have enough power. A low-power phone charger usually will not charge the laptop or will do so very slowly, and the system may show a warning about an underpowered adapter. It is safest to use an adapter rated at least as high as the original.
How much does a charging port replacement cost?
A jack on a cable (eras 1 and 2) is an inexpensive part that most people can replace themselves. Replacing a soldered USB-C port requires a service with micro-soldering and costs more, but still usually less than a new motherboard.
Looking for a charging port for your Lenovo?
In the power jacks category you will find original DC jacks on cables for older ThinkPads and USB-C connectors for service repairs. Adapters are in the power adapters category.
