WiFi and WWAN Module in a ThinkPad - Diagnostics and Replacement
WiFi and WWAN are two different cards, even though they're physically similar (both in M.2 2230 format on newer models, mini-PCIe on older ones) and sometimes confused. WWAN (a cellular modem with a SIM card slot) is an option available exclusively on ThinkPads - IdeaPad and Legion don't offer this feature in any configuration.
Typical symptoms
- Windows sees no WiFi networks at all, even though other devices nearby see them
- Device Manager shows "no wireless network hardware found" or a yellow warning icon on the network adapter
- WiFi connects, but with very weak signal - often the antenna/cable is at fault, not the card itself
- Airplane mode turns on by itself and can't be switched off
The older-ThinkPad trap: BIOS whitelist
Models up to roughly the X250/T450 generation (older-type BIOS) run firmware that checks whether the installed WiFi/WWAN card is on the manufacturer's "whitelist." If you install a card that isn't on that list (even a fully working one bought for a different laptop), the BIOS will block startup with an error message ("1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in"). In that case you need a card that's compatible with that specific model's whitelist, or (an advanced option, at your own risk) a modified BIOS. Newer models (roughly T460/X260 onward) no longer have this restriction.
Diagnosis: the card or the antenna?
If signal problems persist after replacing the card, the thin antenna cables (U.FL connectors) running from the card to the display housing may be at fault - they're easy to damage during screen disassembly. A quick check: install a known-good card and compare signal strength in the same spot.
Replacement
The WiFi card (or WWAN card) itself is a simple swap (two screws, unplug the antennas) once the bottom cover is off. Replacing the antenna cables themselves is harder, since it requires partially disassembling the display.
Send us your laptop model and we'll check whether the card needs to match a BIOS whitelist and find the right one.
