In short: a ThinkPad reports faults in two ways. Older and newer models display a four-digit error code at startup (e.g. 0190, 0271, 1802, 2100). The newest models, when the screen does not work, blink the charging LED in a specific sequence of amber and white flashes - each sequence is a different code. The code usually tells you which part is at fault: battery, CMOS battery, drive, WiFi card, memory, display or motherboard.
We compiled the tables below from Lenovo's official service documentation (Hardware Maintenance Manual) and ThinkPad user guides. For each code we give the sequence of actions recommended by Lenovo and the part that most often needs replacing.
Error codes displayed at ThinkPad startup
The code appears on screen during the POST, before the operating system starts. If several codes are shown, Lenovo recommends starting with the first one - the others are often its consequence.
Most common codes - easy to fix yourself
| Code | Meaning | What to do (Lenovo's sequence) | Part |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0190 | Critical low-battery error - the laptop shut down because the battery is almost empty. | 1. Connect the AC adapter and charge the battery. 2. If the error returns, replace the battery. | Main battery |
| 0271 | Check Date and Time settings - the system clock is not set. | 1. Set the date and time in ThinkPad Setup (BIOS). 2. If it resets after power is removed, replace the CMOS (coin-cell) battery and set the time again. | CMOS battery |
| 0270 | Real Time Clock error. | Lenovo recommends service. In practice, start by checking the CMOS battery. | CMOS battery / board |
| 2100 | Detection error on the main drive (SSD0 / HDD0) - the laptop does not see the drive. | 1. Reseat the M.2 drive. 2. Replace the drive. 3. Replace the motherboard. | SSD |
| 2110 | Read error on the main drive. | 1. Reseat the drive. 2. Replace the drive. 3. Replace the motherboard. | SSD |
| 1802 | Unauthorized network card is plugged in - the BIOS does not accept the installed WiFi/WWAN card. | 1. Turn off the laptop and remove the network card. 2. Install a card approved for this model. 3. If the error persists - motherboard. | WiFi card / WWAN modem |
| 1820 | More than one external fingerprint reader is attached. | Disconnect all readers except the one you set up in the operating system. | None - accessories |
| 0199 | Security password retry count exceeded (more than three wrong supervisor password attempts). | Enter ThinkPad Setup and save the settings (F10) - the retry count is reset. The correct password is required. | None |
| 0191 | System Security - invalid remote change requested. | Enter ThinkPad Setup, save the settings (F10) and try again. | None |
| 0183 | Bad CRC of security settings in EFI variables. | Enter ThinkPad Setup - the settings are corrected automatically - and save (F10). | None (rarely the board) |
Codes pointing to the motherboard or service
| Code | Meaning | Lenovo's recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 0177 | Bad supervisor password data - incorrect checksum in EEPROM. | Replace the motherboard. |
| 0187 | EEPROM access error. | Replace the motherboard. |
| 0188, 0189 | Invalid RFID data area (serialization or configuration) in EEPROM. | Replace the motherboard. |
| 2200 | Machine Type and Serial Number are invalid. | Service - usually after a motherboard replacement where the board was not programmed with the laptop's data. |
| 2201 | Machine UUID is invalid. | Replace the motherboard. |
| 2202 - 2204 | Invalid product name or system configuration data. | Service (programming of system data). |
Important when buying a motherboard. Codes 2200-2204 typically appear when a new board does not yet have the laptop's machine type and serial number written to it. A service centre writes this data with a Lenovo tool after installation. It is not a defect of the board itself.
On the newest models you may also see a message that the UEFI variable storage is almost full. Lenovo recommends pressing F1 and confirming that the storage be cleared in the BIOS - it is not a hardware fault.
The charging LED blinks amber and white - what does it mean?
On the newest ThinkPads (described, among others, in the documentation for the X1 Carbon Gen 13, P1 Gen 8, T14s Gen 6, X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 and the X9 series) the laptop signals an error with the battery charging LED - even when the screen stays black. The LED first blinks a set number of times in amber, then a set number of times in white. The number of flashes is the error code.
| Amber | White | Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1x | 2x | 0001 | Platform reset error | Disconnect power and perform an emergency reset (see below). If it does not help - motherboard. |
| 1x | 3x | 0002 | Internal bus error | Motherboard. |
| 1x | 4x | 0003 | Non-volatile memory programming error in the power circuit | Motherboard. |
| 2x | 1x | 0282 | Memory module error | Reseat or replace the memory module. Only then the board. |
| 2x | 2x | 0283 | PCI resource error | Remove PCIe devices (M.2 drive, M.2 cards). If it does not help - board. |
| 2x | 3x | 0284 | BIOS code validation failure (TCG functions) | Motherboard. |
| 2x | 4x | 0285 | TPM initialization failure | Motherboard. |
| 3x | 1x | 0286 | Integrated graphics error | Motherboard. |
| 3x | 2x | 0287 | Discrete graphics error | Reseat or replace the card, then the board. |
| 3x | 3x | 0288 | Computer display error | Check the display cable and connect an external monitor: if the monitor works - replace the display, if not - board. |
| 4x | 1x | 0281 | General embedded controller (EC) error | Motherboard. |
The LED keeps blinking until the laptop is turned off. To stop the sequence, hold the power button for a few seconds.
Code 0288 step by step - display, cable or board?
- Check that the display cable is properly connected at the board and at the panel (after any chassis repair it is the first suspect).
- Connect an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C.
- The external monitor works - the display panel or its cable is damaged. See our guides display flickers or goes black - cable or panel and how to choose a display cable.
- The external monitor does not work either - the problem is on the motherboard.
Black screen without a code - when must you not turn the laptop off?
The service documentation for the newest ThinkPads describes two situations in which a black screen is normal and you simply have to wait:
- The LEDs on the Esc, F1 and F4 keys blink one after another - the BIOS is performing memory retraining. This happens, among others, after a RAM module replacement, after changing memory encryption settings or after a BIOS update. Do not press the power button - the logo will appear after a few minutes.
- The Esc, F1 and F4 LEDs blink simultaneously - the BIOS is self-recovering, restoring the last good copy. Progress: Esc alone blinks (0-32%), Esc and F1 (33-65%), Esc, F1 and F4 (66-100%). Do not interrupt either.
If the key LEDs do not blink and the power LED is on with a black screen, Lenovo recommends in sequence: the display self test, checking all connectors, reseating the RAM, and finally replacing the board.
How to reset a ThinkPad before diagnosis?
Before you start replacing parts, perform the reset recommended in Lenovo's user guides:
- Disconnect the AC adapter (and the battery, if removable).
- Models with an emergency reset hole (a small hole on the bottom): insert a straightened paper clip for a few seconds. Models without the hole: hold the power button for about 7 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter and restart the laptop.
If the laptop does not respond at all and no LED lights up, go to our guide Lenovo laptop won't turn on or charge.
Frequently asked questions
What does error 0271 mean on a ThinkPad?
The laptop has no date and time set. If the message returns every time power is removed, the CMOS battery that keeps the clock running is depleted. How to choose a new one is described in our guide CMOS battery for a ThinkPad.
What does error 1802 mean after replacing the WiFi card?
The ThinkPad BIOS accepts only network cards approved for the given model (the so-called whitelist). A card outside the list blocks startup with code 1802. The solution is a card with the FRU number intended for your model - more in our guide WiFi and WWAN module in a ThinkPad.
Error 2100 - is the drive dead?
Not necessarily. Lenovo recommends first removing and reinserting the M.2 drive - a drive loosened by a drop or a repair gives the same code. If that does not help, replace the drive; the motherboard is only the third step. M.2 drive formats in Lenovo laptops are described in our guide M.2 SSD formats.
Error 0190 appears even with the AC adapter connected. What next?
If the battery does not charge with the adapter connected, the problem may lie in the battery itself, the adapter or the charging port. See our guides battery diagnostics and replacement and DC and USB-C charging port.
My code is not in the table. What should I do?
Write down the code and the exact message, as well as the machine type from the label underneath the laptop. Send them to us - we will check in the service documentation for your model which part it concerns.
