❓ WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE THE FINGERPRINT READER?

• Problem with an undetected reader - Windows Hello says no fingerprint reader was found
• Problem with an unrecognised fingerprint - you touch the sensor several times and sign-in still fails
• Problem with a damaged sensor - cracked or worn surface after a drop or liquid spill
• Problem with a reader that disappears and reappears in Device Manager
• Problem with a missing reader - you want to add fingerprint sign-in to a laptop that did not have it

🔧 INSTALLATION PROCESS

1. Turn off Windows Fast Startup, restart the laptop, press F1 and in ThinkPad Setup select Config → Power → Disable built-in battery. The laptop turns off, wait 3-5 minutes
2. Unscrew and remove the bottom cover
3. Gain access to the reader - on ThinkPad P15 Gen 1 and P17 Gen 1 this requires removing the keyboard and the keyboard bezel assembly (palm rest). For other models follow the removal order in the model's Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM)
4. Disconnect the cable from the reader's J1 connector, remove the retaining bracket and take out the old module
5. Place the new module with the sensor in the chassis opening, refit the bracket and connect the cable to J1, closing the latch
6. Reassemble in reverse order and connect the AC adapter, which re-enables the built-in battery
7. Boot the system and enrol your fingerprint in Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options (Windows Hello)
Replacement by a technical service or a person experienced in laptop repairs is recommended.
