Bluetooth in Lenovo laptops - combo card, separate module and what to do when Bluetooth disappears
Short answer: in newer Lenovo laptops (from the x40 generation, e.g. T440 and X240) Bluetooth is part of a combo Wi-Fi card, so Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are replaced together with one M.2 card. In older ThinkPads (e.g. T400, T410, T420, X200-X220) Bluetooth is a small separate module with its own cable. If Bluetooth disappeared together with Wi-Fi, the combo card is usually at fault; if only Bluetooth disappears while Wi-Fi works, it is most often the driver or settings.
Updated: November 2026. Based on Lenovo documentation (user guides, Hardware Maintenance Manuals, the Lenovo parts catalogue) and our daily work matching genuine parts.
How Bluetooth is built into Lenovo laptops
| Design | Where | What you replace |
|---|---|---|
| Separate Bluetooth module | Older ThinkPads, e.g. T400, T500, X200 (Helike module), T410, T510, X201 (BCM2070), T420, T520, X220 (Elpis 3.0) | A small module with a cable: T400 / T500 / X200, X301 / T400s / SL, T410 / T510 / X201, T420 / T520 / X220 |
| Combo Wi-Fi + Bluetooth card (Lenovo marks it “CMB”) | From the x40 generation to date, M.2 2230 form factor | The whole card: e.g. Intel 8260 (T470 / X270 / T570), Intel 8265 (T470s / X270), Intel 22560 Wi-Fi 6 CNVi (P15 / T15g / P17) |
In part names Lenovo marks combo cards “CMB” (e.g. “Wireless,CMB,IN,8265”). Such a card has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in one chip: Wi-Fi uses the antennas, and Bluetooth talks to the system through the same M.2 slot.
The Bluetooth version depends on the card
| Intel card | Wi-Fi standard | Bluetooth (per Intel) |
|---|---|---|
| 8260 / 8265 | Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) | 4.2 |
| 9560 | Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), CNVi | 5.1 |
| AX200 / AX201 | Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), AX201 is CNVi | 5.2 |
| AX210 / AX211 | Wi-Fi 6E, AX211 is CNVi | 5.3 |
| BE200 / BE201 | Wi-Fi 7, BE201 is CNVi | 5.4 |
Replacing the combo card with a newer one therefore also upgrades Bluetooth, but only if the new card is compatible with the laptop (CNVi or PCIe, parts list, BIOS). Details in the guide Wi-Fi card - how to choose.
Bluetooth not working - diagnosis
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disappeared together - on a combo card this is most often a card fault or a loose card. Check whether the card shows up in Device Manager.
- Wi-Fi works, Bluetooth does not - start with Airplane mode, the Bluetooth toggle in settings and the card maker's Bluetooth driver (Intel cards have a separate Bluetooth driver).
- Bluetooth finds devices but connects only up close - Lenovo specifies a range of up to 10 m. On a combo card Bluetooth uses the Wi-Fi antennas, so weak range on both points to the antenna cables.
- Older ThinkPad with a separate module - check that the module and its cable are connected. The cable is often left unplugged after a palmrest or keyboard replacement.
How to pair a device (Windows)
According to the Lenovo guide: open Bluetooth settings, turn Bluetooth on in the laptop and in the device, make the device discoverable and select it under “Add device”. Devices that support Swift Pair show a notification with a “Connect” button. Laptops with NFC can also pair by tapping: NFC module in a ThinkPad.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bluetooth a separate part in a Lenovo laptop?
Not in newer models, where Bluetooth is on the combo Wi-Fi card (M.2). Older ThinkPads, e.g. T400-T420 and X200-X220, have a separate Bluetooth module.
Why did Bluetooth disappear after I replaced the Wi-Fi card?
The new card may have no Bluetooth (Wi-Fi-only cards exist), may be missing its Bluetooth driver, or may be a CNVi card fitted in a laptop without CNVi support. Choose a combo card compatible with your model.
Can I get a newer Bluetooth version without a new laptop?
Yes, by replacing the combo card with a newer one, as long as it is compatible with your laptop. For example a Wi-Fi 6E card gives Bluetooth 5.3 instead of 4.2 on an 8265 card.
What range does Bluetooth have in a ThinkPad?
Lenovo recommends keeping devices at most 10 metres from the computer for a stable connection.
Where can I find Bluetooth modules and combo cards?
In the Bluetooth/WiFi modules category. Match them by the FRU number from your model's parts list.
