Wi-Fi card for a Lenovo laptop - how to choose: mini PCIe or M.2, CNVi or PCIe, BIOS whitelist
Short answer: four things decide which Wi-Fi card fits a Lenovo laptop: the slot (older ThinkPads use mini PCIe, from the x40 generation M.2 2230), the card type (CNVi only works in Intel laptops with CNVi support, a PCIe card is universal), the BIOS (older models accept only cards on the Lenovo list and show error 1802 otherwise) and the antennas. The safest way is to choose the card by FRU number from your model's parts list.

Step 1: the card slot
| Slot | Models (examples) | Cards in our shop |
|---|---|---|
| Mini PCIe (half size) | Older ThinkPads, e.g. T400, X200, T420, X220, T430, X230 | Intel 5100, Intel 5300, 802.11a/b/g/n card for T400 / T400s, Intel 6205 (T430 / X230 / T530) |
| M.2 2230 (Key A+E) | From the x40 generation (T440, X240) to date | Intel 8260 (T460 / X260 / T560), Intel 8260 vPro (T470 / X270 / T570), Intel 8265 (T470s / X270), Intel 8265 vPro, Intel 22560 Wi-Fi 6 CNVi (P15 / T15g / P17) |
M.2 Wi-Fi cards share the 2230 size with some drives, but use a different key (A+E), so they are not interchangeable with SSDs: M.2 form factors guide.
Step 2: CNVi or PCIe
Some Intel cards are CNVi cards (e.g. 9560, AX201, AX211, BE201). Half of the Wi-Fi logic sits in the Intel processor chipset and the card holds only the radio part. Such a card works only in Intel laptops with CNVi support; in an AMD laptop or an older Intel one it will not be detected. PCIe cards (e.g. 8260, 8265, AX200, AX210, BE200) carry the whole chip on the card and work in a wider range of laptops. Lenovo often states CNVi in the part name, e.g. “Intel 22560 ... (CNVi)”.
The AMD and Intel versions of the same model (e.g. T14 Gen 2) may use different Wi-Fi cards, so first identify the exact machine type: serial number and MTM.
Step 3: the BIOS whitelist in older ThinkPads
Older ThinkPads, including the T420, X220, T430 and X230, check whether the installed card is on the Lenovo list. With a card outside the list the laptop stops at boot with 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in, even though the card works. For these models buy a card with a FRU number from that model's parts list. Full error code list: ThinkPad error codes.
Step 4: antennas
A Wi-Fi card usually has two U.FL antenna connectors (main and auxiliary). The cables run to antennas around the display, so poor range after opening the screen is often a damaged cable, not the card. We also stock antennas and related parts: T540p / W540 Wi-Fi/WWAN antennas, left, right, T490s / T14s WLAN/WWAN antenna, left, right, T540p / W540 Wi-Fi card cover.
Wi-Fi standards at a glance
| Standard | Example Intel cards | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) | 5100, 5300, 6205 | Older ThinkPads, mini PCIe, often a BIOS whitelist |
| Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) | 7260, 8260, 8265, 9560 | M.2 2230; 9560 is CNVi |
| Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) | AX200, AX201 | AX201 is CNVi (Intel with CNVi support) |
| Wi-Fi 6E | AX210, AX211 | 6 GHz band; AX211 is CNVi |
| Wi-Fi 7 | BE200, BE201 | Latest models; BE201 is CNVi |
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit any M.2 Wi-Fi card in a ThinkPad?
Not always. The card needs the right slot and type (CNVi only in Intel laptops with CNVi support), and older models accept only cards on the Lenovo list. The safest way is to choose the card by FRU number from the parts list.
What does error 1802 after a Wi-Fi card swap mean?
“Unauthorized network card is plugged in” means the BIOS of an older ThinkPad does not accept a card outside the Lenovo list. Fit a card from that model's parts list.
Why does my new Wi-Fi 6 card not work in my AMD laptop?
Most likely it is a CNVi card (e.g. AX201 or AX211), which needs an Intel chipset with CNVi support. AMD laptops work with PCIe cards such as the AX200 or AX210, as long as the model accepts them.
Weak Wi-Fi range: card or antennas?
If the problem started after the screen was opened or after a drop, check the antenna cables and their U.FL ends. Compare the range with another working card in the same spot.
Does replacing the Wi-Fi card also change Bluetooth?
Yes, on combo cards Bluetooth is part of the Wi-Fi card. More in Bluetooth in Lenovo laptops.
