NFC module in a ThinkPad laptop - how it works, which models have it and how to replace it
Short answer: NFC in a ThinkPad is contactless communication over a few centimetres: you tap an NFC card or smartphone on the NFC mark near the touchpad and the laptop reads or pairs with it. It only works in an NFC configuration made of three parts: the NFC module (in most ThinkPads since 2017 the Foxconn NPC300, FRU 01AX745), an NFC version of the touchpad, and the cables connecting them. In Windows, NFC is switched on in the Airplane mode settings.
Updated: November 2026. Based on Lenovo documentation (user guides, Hardware Maintenance Manuals, the Lenovo parts catalogue) and our daily work matching genuine parts.
What NFC is used for in a laptop
According to the Lenovo user guide, NFC lets you “tap and connect” your computer with another NFC-enabled device over a few centimetres. In practice this means:
- reading NFC cards - the card must store data in NDEF (NFC Data Exchange Format), otherwise the laptop will not detect it (a note from the Lenovo guide),
- pairing with a smartphone or a card by tapping the NFC mark,
- corporate solutions - e.g. access cards and card login, if your IT department deploys such software.
Laptops with NFC have an NFC logo on or next to the touchpad. If your ThinkPad has none, it most likely has no NFC module either.
How to turn on NFC in Windows
Type “Airplane mode” in the Windows search box, make sure Airplane mode is off and turn on the NFC toggle. If there is no NFC toggle at all, the system cannot see the module: either the laptop has no NFC, or the module, cable or connector is damaged or disconnected.
What NFC in a ThinkPad consists of
| Part | Role | Examples in our shop |
|---|---|---|
| NFC module | Small board with the NFC controller, fixed with double-sided tape, with two cable connectors | 01AX745 for T14, P14s, T16, X13, L13, 01AX745 for T470-T590, 01AX745 for X270-X390 |
| NFC version of the touchpad | The tap area, marked with the NFC logo; Lenovo has separate FRU numbers for touchpads with and without NFC | X1 Carbon 9, 10, 11, T14 / P14s Gen 3-4, T16 / P16s Gen 1-2, L13 / L14 / L15, X280 / X1 Carbon 5-6, T440 / T440s / X1 Carbon 2 |
| NFC cables | Connect the touchpad and module to the system board; in some models it is a shared touchpad and NFC cable | X280 NFC touchpad cable, T14s Gen 2 NFC touchpad cable, X1 Carbon 9 / X1 Yoga 6 NFC/WWAN touchpad cable |
All three parts must be NFC versions. A module fitted in a laptop with a non-NFC touchpad will not work, because the tap area and the proper connection are missing. Before adding NFC, check the parts list for your machine type (MTM): how to find the serial number and MTM.
Which models use the 01AX745 module (Foxconn NPC300)
According to the current Lenovo parts list, the 01AX745 module is used in dozens of ThinkPad families, including:
- X1: X1 Carbon Gen 6 and Gen 9-14, X1 Yoga Gen 4-8, X1 2-in-1 Gen 9-11, X1 Tablet Gen 3
- X: X13 Gen 1 and Gen 4-7, X13 Yoga Gen 4, X13 2-in-1, X12 and X13 Detachable
- T: T14 Gen 4-7, T14s Gen 1, 2 and 4-7, T14s 2-in-1, T16 Gen 1-5, T16g, T1g
- P: P1 Gen 7-9, P14s Gen 4-7, P16 Gen 1-3, P16s, P16v
- L: L13, L13 Yoga, L14, L15, L16
The same module was used earlier in 2017-2019 ThinkPads, including the T470, T470s, T480, T480s, T490, T570, T580, T590, X270, X280, X380 Yoga, X390, P51s, P52 and P52s. Lenovo no longer shows these machines on the 01AX745 list, but the NFC module appears in their service manuals. The full model list with machine types is on the 01AX745 NFC module page.
Older ThinkPads also offered NFC, e.g. the x40 generation (T440s, X1 Carbon 2nd Gen), but with different parts, so match them by FRU number: how to read a FRU number.
NFC not working - step-by-step diagnosis
- Check that the Airplane mode settings show an NFC toggle and that it is on.
- Check that the card uses NDEF. An ordinary contactless card (e.g. a payment card) may not be detected.
- Hold the card exactly on the NFC logo on the touchpad for a few seconds.
- If the NFC toggle is missing but the laptop has the NFC logo, remove the cover and check that the module and cables are connected. A cable is often left unplugged after a touchpad or palmrest replacement.
- Replace a damaged module (e.g. after a spill) with a working one with the same FRU number.
Replacing the NFC module
Before you start, disable the built-in battery in ThinkPad Setup (Disable built-in battery) and disconnect the power adapter. After removing the base cover, disconnect the cables from the module, carefully peel it off the double-sided tape, stick the new one in the same place and connect the cables. The module location differs between models, so check the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) of your ThinkPad.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check whether my ThinkPad has NFC?
Look for the NFC logo on or next to the touchpad and an NFC toggle in the Windows Airplane mode settings. The parts list for your machine type (MTM) gives a definite answer: if an NFC module is on it, the laptop has NFC.
Can I add NFC to a laptop that does not have it?
Sometimes, but you need the full set: the NFC module, an NFC version of the touchpad and the correct cables for that model. Check on your MTM parts list whether an NFC version existed and match every part by FRU number.
Why does the laptop not detect my NFC card?
Most often the card is not in NDEF format or you are tapping the wrong spot. Lenovo states that the NFC card must be in NDEF format, otherwise the computer cannot detect it.
Does a 01AX745 module from one ThinkPad fit another?
Yes, if both models list the same FRU 01AX745. It is one part for dozens of ThinkPad families, from the T470 and X270 to the latest T14, T16 and X1 Carbon.
Do I need to solder anything to replace NFC?
No. The module is held by double-sided tape and connected with cables. Just remove the base cover and follow the service manual of your model.
