WWAN modem (LTE/5G) in a Lenovo laptop - how to choose the modem, antennas and SIM tray
Short answer: WWAN is a built-in cellular modem that lets the laptop go online through a SIM card. To work, the laptop needs four things: a modem in the right form factor (older ThinkPads mini PCIe, from the x40 generation M.2), WWAN antennas, a SIM slot or tray (or eSIM) and BIOS support. Choose the modem by FRU number from your model's parts list, because Lenovo assigns specific modems to specific machine types.

Without antennas and a SIM the modem will not work
A laptop bought without WWAN usually has no WWAN antennas or SIM tray, and sometimes no WWAN-version case parts either. Adding WWAN needs the full set:
- WWAN antennas - e.g. X1 Carbon 9, 10, 11 (4G/5G), T14s Gen 2 (4G/5G), T14s Gen 3-4, T14 / P14s Gen 3-4, X1 Carbon 5-6, P52 left,
- SIM card tray - e.g. nano SIM T14 / T16 / P14s / P16s, T14 / T15 / P15 / P17, T490 / T590 / P53s, X280 / X390 / T490s, T460s / T470s, T440 / T450, X1 Carbon 12-13, X13 Gen 4-5,
- WWAN-version parts - in some models the palmrest, case or touchpad cable differ in the WWAN version, e.g. T14 Gen 3-4 WWAN palmrest, X1 Carbon 9 / X1 Yoga 6 NFC/WWAN touchpad cable.
Some newer models also support eSIM: the Lenovo parts catalogue for the X1 Carbon Gen 9 lists a “Wireless,SIM,Gemalto eSIM” module.
How to choose a modem step by step
- Find your machine type (MTM): how to find the serial number and MTM.
- Check on your MTM parts list which WWAN modems Lenovo specifies (FRU numbers).
- Check whether the laptop has WWAN antennas and a SIM tray. If not, choose them for your model.
- Pick a modem from the list, including the FRU equivalents Lenovo gives for that number.
Older ThinkPads (including the T420, X220, T430, X230) stop at boot with error 1802 when a network module outside the Lenovo list is installed, so the FRU number matters especially there: ThinkPad error codes.
WWAN is not only in ThinkPads
A cellular modem is mainly a ThinkPad option, but Lenovo also had selected consumer models with cellular connectivity, e.g. the IdeaPad 4G/5G 14, Yoga 5G, Flex 5G or Miix 510 and 520. We stock parts for some of them, e.g. Yoga 5G / Flex 5G 14 antenna hinges, IdeaPad 4G/5G 14 bottom case.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add an LTE modem to a laptop without WWAN?
Often yes, if the system board has a WWAN slot. You then also need WWAN antennas, a SIM tray and sometimes WWAN-version case parts. Check on your MTM parts list whether a WWAN version existed.
What is the difference between WWAN and Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi connects the laptop to a nearby router, while WWAN connects to the operator's cellular network through a SIM card, so it works wherever there is coverage. They are two separate cards in separate slots.
Will a modem from another ThinkPad work in mine?
Only the same FRU number (or an equivalent given by Lenovo) on your model's parts list gives certainty. The same modem chip may have different Lenovo numbers for different models.
What SIM card do I need?
Newer ThinkPads have a nano SIM tray, and some models also support eSIM. The tray size depends on the model, so choose it for your specific generation.
How fast is an LTE modem in a laptop?
It depends on the modem category. For example the Quectel EM120R-GL is LTE-A Category 12, theoretically up to 600 Mbps download and 150 Mbps upload. Real speed depends on the operator and coverage.
